it’s offical

I have come down with a nasty flu, chills and everything. Which sucks, cause I first felt it coming on yesterday which was jammed packed with fun things to do (including throwing my very first crafting party where I made something that looks a little like this but cost me NOTHING instead of 64 dollars American – I will post pictures later to prove it), and while I did have fun my heart was only about 2/3 into it (the other 1/3 wanting to curl up in bed and stay there forever).
Although, with so many people coming in and out of the house yesterday, one thing was established: the votes are in and Kaylee is officially the cutest cat ever.

super cute!

Aaaaand done. Finally. Bethmaher.com is up and running. I am realising I am a perfectionist. I have redesigned and re-done everything here, and I’ve only owned the domain for a couple weeks. I even tested it in 4 separate browsers, on 2 different operating systems (explorer for Mac still has some kinks, but I don’t feel like fixing them yet, because who in their right mind would be running explorer on a Mac anyways). I coded and re-coded until I couldn’t stand to see another line of code. If some nerd comes to tell me that my site is not up to snuff, or web standards or some kind of nonsense, I will have to remind them that Enterprise has been cancelled. No more sexy Vulcans for them (note to self: still need to make favicon and 404 page – damnit, like I’m not going to miss the sexy Vulcan myself).
I am super happy with the little me you see in the header up there though.
Bunny hat! Super cute!

flintstonian

Usually I don’t care much when celebrities die. Occasionally I do. Hunter S. Thompson was a genius (irregardless of his controversy), and his death is tragic. He did so much for journalism and writing, especially the radical kind that we as student journalists are supposed to uphold. I knew we (at the Press) had to acknowledge him somewhere. So I did my edcomic this week as bit of a tribute to him.

On the more technical side of things, I just realised that my edcomic characters look very Flintstoneian. I think I’m OK with that actually. Its better than South Parkian (which I hear about them way, way too often).
This is not actually the print version. I wasn’t happy with it, so I tweaked it a little. I spent forever on it yesterday, wanting to get it just right. I wish I’d give myself more time to do these things, but then they very often wouldn’t be timely (which is critical for an edcomic).

monstrosity in Vaughan

I just spent the weekend at home in the RH (and yes, it does happen to be the region in the greater Toronto area that best replicates that show I am refererencing, or at least very close to it).
I got the oppurtunity to visit the monstrosity in Vaughan. Or, rather, was dragged to it by my family. Happy birthday to me. To my suprise it was not entirely horrifying though. They at least had an H&M and this awesomely huge Japanese imports store. I’m a sucker for all things cute and Japanese. I also couldn’t help but think that the designers who got the chance to work on it must have had quite a time. It is admitedly a giant extra-sensory-invading, consumerism-theme-park, but to design something that huge, brightly coloured, surreal and all around gaudy must have been pretty enjoyable. Like a Scorcese movie set in, well… a mall.
Visiting St. Lawrence market was a nice antidote to it though. I hated that place when I was a kid, (it smelled quite literally fishy) but now that I can appreciate the finer things in life (like foooooooood!) I appreciate it a whole lot more. It’s one of those places that retains a sense of true, old fashioned Toronto-ness for me though. Colourful in the non-gaudy sense. I just wish it was sanitary for some duck breasts and venison sausage to have made it the long way back home. I had to settle for non-perishable truffle oil and Provinciale style mustard.

little birdies

I’ve been seeing a lot of cute little bird illustrations everywhere, and thinking to myself that I would never make something like them, which of course spurs me on to do it anyways.
I drew up a little valentine .pdf to send to my friends and co-workers, with a kissing birdies theme.
I tried to go for rough, organic and trendy, but it came off hippy-dippy and groovy (I think there’s some acsociation with birds and the partridge family in my head) so I decided to go with it.
I threw in text using a great typeface I found somewhere “blackcurrant cameo”. It reminds me of funky sixties poster design for things like la dolce vita, or of course, the partridge family. It’s so rare to find great typefaces online, I forgive it for being such an outrageous novelty font.

virgin post

The de rigueur posting of my cat Kaylee seems like an appropriate place to start. If youre into irony, I guess..

Awww… Ain’t she cute? We’ve only had her two weeks, and now that she’s eating (had a stressed-out anorexic moment there) she’s a delight. When she isn’t whining. Yep, she’s a teenage livejournal user stuck in the body of the cutest cat in the world.
