kids these days

Watch out!
There are forces conspiring to screw us out of the little that we have.
One should specifically watch out for Leah McLaren, and Debbie Travis.
According to the both of them, my generation is the following:

Over-educated,
Over-achieving,
Over-indulged,
Entitled,
Cocky,
Lazy,
Work Ethic-less,
Rude,
and
Horrible.

Why do they think this?
I have no clue.
I don’t know why those two think that the mature thing to do here is to tear apart and smear the younger generation to a national audience.
Debbie Travis may well be worried that her own demon spawn will turn out horrible thanks to her coddling of them and is trying to head off their lack of talent or work ethic by berating their generational competitors into trade jobs, while filming the escapade and screaming a lot, in an attempt to position herself as a decorating version of Jamie Oliver…
Except for, of course, people actually like Jamie Oliver, as he’s a good cook and a nice person…
This is only a theory of course.

Leah Mclaren on the other hand…
Well she’s written an article for May’s Readers Digest (which I can’t link to, because they are not exactly all about modern technology) about how bratty and spoiled the kids of the Baby Boomers are.
To prove this, she talked to some middle aged people who are threatened by the vague (and unlikely) possibility of Ivy League educated 23 year olds taking their jobs.
Hey, I am worried about the same thing – except for I’m 24 and I don’t have a good job to begin with.
And neither does my boyfriend.
And neither do any of my friends.
And frankly I’m more worried about those Boomers living longer and NOT dying and choosing NOT to retire and therefore NOT giving up their cushy desk jobs any time soon.
Not to mention that due to downsizing and out-sourcing the positions that are occasionally left open by expiring boomers are not filled at all. They simply cease to exist.
Oh, and there is no longer such a thing as an entry level job.
And nobody gets hired through internships anymore. (Why would they? It’s free labour. Why pay someone for something you could get new, fresh, young, naive students to do for free.)
To further back up her theory, Ms. Mclaren cites that precocious prat Craig Kielberger.
I don’t know the guy, but I grew up in the same neighbourhood and went to school with his best friend, and a bunch of people who helped start Free the Children with him.
I can tell you he is in no way indicative of anyone I knew during that time.
She then goes on to briefly interview (this being Readers Digest, after all) one (and only one) youngster named “Emma Ruby-Sachs.”
Yes, a girl who is a Wesleyan grad and an intern for “the Nation” is so very representative of my generation.
If I had a nickel for every ol’ Wesleyan gal I know…
Oh, to relive my days visiting it’s halls of proverbial ivy and leather bound books, drinking scotch and discussing the classics…
Oh… Wait… Right.
I think that was an episode of the Gilmore Girls…
Normal people do not attend Ivy League schools!
People who are rich, cocky and entitled to begin with (regardless of their generation) do however…
Maybe Leah just needs get out of her Globe and Mail cubicle and make some new friends.

    Yeah.
I actually deleted a line about Leah and pots and kettles that one might look at and call black.
But I felt it was obvious and unnecessary.

  3. Vivian says:

wow you should really publish this rant

  4. Dart says:

    What, we’re lazy?
I’m sorry, I was too busy balancing a more-than-full-time academic program with a 28-hour work week to notice. Cheers, though. Thanks for letting me know that.
Also, Debbie Travis can build things and is sort of MILF-y, so we can almost let her slide.
Leah McClaren? Isn’t she like only five years older than us ?
    Arrgh.

“Leah McClaren? Isn’t she like only five years older than us ?”
Funnily enough, I also deleted that pretty much exact line from my original rant.
Either I need to trust my literary instincts when writing, or I somehow have manged to create a telepathic link between myself and my readers!
Or maybe I deleted the lines that were redundant and obvious because I’m a good little self-editor.

A couple of years ago on Newsworld, I think, I saw a reporter goad Debbie Travis into an amazingly angry, bitchy, and self-aggrandizing tirade against The Designer Guys, accusing them of ripping off her ideas, etc. When that footage was then shown to the Guys, they gentlemanly took the high road and suggested that Debbie must have been having a bad day.

Debbie Travis isn’t a very likeable person.
