sweaty but surprising

Today I got invited into a dark, dank basement by a strange boy on the street to “see something cool.”
So I followed him down.
There I met a sweet painter girl named Constance (how awesome is that name?) who was painting a mural on the walls (and floor) of a small room.
Just goes to show that you should always do what random strange boys on the street tell you to do.
Then I bought a used copy of a Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius because I’ve been meaning to read it for pretty much ever.
Later I saw Martha Burns (and her adorable son – who looks just like her husband). She is awesome, but Liam wouldn’t say hello.
Then we had yummy sushi.
It is 44 degrees (that’s Celsius) with the humidity here in Toronto, but I have had a good (and surprising) day anyway.

yummy!

my living room

My living room is finally starting to shape up nicely (at least in certain corners).

I finished my throw pillows. They’re reversible. Both fabrics are vintage (they were my grandmothers).

These are some super-cute paint-by-numbers that my grandpa painted in the fifties. They hung in his house for as long as I can remember, and now they’re mine. I love them. They’re such nice retro colours too.

This is my new couch!
I love it. It’s kinda of a deep grey flannel/microfiber. It’s new, but it has a vintage look to it. It is a zillion times comfier than our old sofa bed.

Now, we are going to go see X-men 3 for cheap at a matinee (which is the only way to see it, really) and then we are going to come home, I am going to make lots of yummy Italian food, and watch the Godfather 2. I am excited!

May

bee, as in busy

After being woken up for the third time in a row by somebody pulling the fire alarm (1:00 AM, 6:00 AM and 7:00…. yay…) I have decided it’s time to wake up.
But it’s ok, cause today I’m going to crafternoon tea and antiqueing and maybe the Scott Pilgrim volume three launch party, and tomorrow I’m seeing some of my friends from high school for the first time in, like, forever (they’re pretty much all smarty-pants who spend all their time getting their masters of geniusness from their respective, well-respected universities).
And I’ve been making throw pillows for my new couch.
I have been neglecting my crafty nature.
That has been making me feel grumpy and un-accomplished.
I started with a couple of little ones in a very pretty, variegated, teal tweed, and have still have a couple left in a red, vintage twill (but thankfully, getting started is the hard part – my sewing machine/brain takes a few tries to get going).
Next up for me: figuring out a inexpensive way to make a light fixture along the lines of those gorgeous and trendy paper cut-out ones. It’s just cut-out paper, right? I should be able to manage that for less than 100 dollars, without going cross-eyed and twitchy, right?
Now I have to go, because my kitten is chewing on my laptop.

cozy

little girl

The kitten’s good, getting gangly and growing bit by bit.
We spent a cozy night in last night (although with us, most nights are cozy and in) watching Lost (AHHHHHH! SO AWESOME!), and eating Mexican food prepared from ingredients found in Kensington Market.
It’s funny, the first time I went to Kensington I was in grade two or three, and was on a field trip – I hated it. I thought it was smelly and boring.
It’s still smelly and boring (pretty much exactly the same 20 years later, actually) but now I love it.
Must have something to do with 36 yellow corn tortillas for $1.99, $0.99 worth of whole coriander and 200 grams of cumin spiced gouda.

yummy!

Yeah, so I’ve been busy all of a sudden.
But I have a kitten.
And you don’t.
So there.

mr. b

the bronsteter

A (not very good) caricature of Mr. Dollarama, back when he was more shaggy and unkempt.

Why do I have Kelly Clarkson’s magnum opus: “Since U Been Gone” stuck in my head?
I don’t listen to her, or anything that plays her music.
At very least, I’m like 14 months behind the times.
It’s always right before I try to go to sleep that these things implant in my head.
There should be a law against repetitive pop music being played anywhere near any human being less than 2 hours before bedtime.
