I’m lame, but a good sister
I have been having a good little time recently.
I signed up for a MySpace, finally, after avoiding it for like, ever.
Someone finally convinced me that it’s not completely evil, and that I could find a lot of cool new bands (which so far I have) and maybe even get a few illustrating gigs (which so far I have too - although not directly by being on MySpace - but by networking on the internet in general).
And so far I…
Actually enjoy it! Wow. I never thought I’d say that.
Now I have a MySpace, a Flickr, a LiveJournal and a blog.
How lame is that?
Yesterday I had a wonderful day with my sister.
We sat around and chatted and played with the kittens and watched Canada’s Next Top Model (It’s totally between crazy Cici and sweet Ylania) and movies (a Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman retrospective) and made healthy, spicy Jamaican food
We had ginger beer, rice and peas (which actually means rice and kidney beans with coconut milk), and vegetable coconut curry roti - like we grew up with living in Rexdale.
Then this morning I made her tropical fruit salad, and pita stuffed with blue cheese, smoked chicken and salad.
Then I sent her home with my umbrella.
I am a good sister.

No offense or anything, but these Canadian versions of American reality tv shows are super weird. Like “Canadian Idol.” Have any of these people done anything beyond the show? I will give it some credit - the judges are actually far more entertaining and over the top on CI. I watched the audition portion of the latest season and it was seriously violent.
I am very curious about Canada’s Next Top Model though because I love ANTM. Who hosts it?

Canadian Idol is definitley even more stupid than American idol.
But Canada’s Next Top Model is awesome!
Tricia Helfer hosts. Who’s the hot cylon on Battlestar Gallactica (if you’re familiar with that show). Which might seem like a bit of a weird choice (when, for example some of the hottest models of all time - Linda, Shalom, Daria - are Canadian) but I like her better than Tyra. She’s really nurturing, but firm.
Plus I’m a nerd, and love Battlestar Gallactica.
And the show has totally high production values, and the girls are soooooo good. They are different from the American girls though. Less pretty and more unique looking, like couture/high fashion girls should be.
The end result, is that it’s more of a spin-off than a weird international version.

Plus, hey, Jeanne Beker! You can’t go wrong.
I thought Natalie was the most beautiful….

My beef with CaNTM is the fact that the girls actually only come from three provinces, and there are no girls from Québec, the hot girl capital of Canada.
Also, Stacey what’s-her-face, the lightskinned black model who sometimes shows up to coach them, went to my (first) high school.
And I always forget your Rexdale hood cred.

I dunno about CNTM. As a Victoria resident, it all seems particularly cheesy when you know all the locations they’re at, most of which are pretty unglamourous . I like how we always see them walking through an underground parking lot on the way to judging - so lame! (A defunct furniture store was used for the judging set)
The quality of the cinematography and photography isn’t as good as ANTM either, in my opinion. And Tricia Helfer - “firm”, you say. I say “cold and speaks waaaaaaaaaaaaay too slowly.”
On the other hand, these shows are really about the personalities, and that’s what makes CNTM worth watching. “Less pretty and more unique looking” . . . yes, yes they are, for the most part. Some to the point of boringness, though. Thank goodness they got a few strong personalities to spice things up.
