little hat, little scarf
See,
I told ya I knitted something cute for my blythe girl.
I designed the pattern for the hat all by myself. Which is pretty impressive for a beginner, if I do say so myself.

Yet another big weekend hereabouts.
First the kitten got sick, and we had to blow some money on taking her to the vet only to find out she was fine, but probably ate something she shouldn’t have.
Which sounds like her.
Now we call her the money pit.
Then I went to a blythe meet at the Magic Pony. I didn’t take pictures, but everyone else did, so it’s just a matter of waiting it out, and stealing them from Flickr (Hurry up new Blythe buddies!).
Then Travis was going to visit, but he couldn’t get on the bus so he didn’t.
Then something very, very cool happened:
I got hired to write for Torontoist!
Woo-woo! I now, officially join the ranks of the paid bloggers!
Before I left this last weekend, I actually did some art!
I painted this little painting/collage for my studio. It turned out pretty cute for a last minute project. Nicely graphic and cheerful (which is just what I need for inspiration).
Also on view, is my new red glass candy dish, and german transistor radio (from the early sixties), as well as a few of my little friends.
I finally got mailed some teensy tiny shoes last week, so I did a little photoshoot to celebrate.
So here’s my Sofia, in a little vintage traveling outfit, modeling inside my antique suitcase (I think it’s wishful thinking - we’d both really like to go on vacation).
(Click through the photo for more on Flickr.)
I think I am consciously taking a break from drawing because I know if I don’t I will blow out pretty quick in school - but I should really get back to it so I don’t get too rusty.
Instead I foiled my dollies eyes yesterday. They look all pretty and sparkely now. But I burnt myself on the glue stick.
Still, it was a remarkably simple and cheap transformation: 2 bucks for glue-sticks at Walmart, 2 bucks for foiling papers at the Paper Place. Remarkable, when the dolls themselves ain’t cheap.
Which brings me to the fact that I’ve been oogling dollies again. I think I want an I love you, it’s true. At least she’s not tooooo very expensive. Maybe I’ll find a deal on Ebay someday.
Sigh.
We also saw Brick which was pretty… hmmm… what’s the right word… engaging? I would say entertaining - it was - but it was no shallow summer blockbuster. It was very involving. You have to pay attention to everything that’s going on. If you like film noir, or David Mamet or Memento, it’s probably up your alley.
We also rented Brazil, which I would say some of the same things about - except for it moved pretty slow instead of very fast. But I’m more than ok with that (I’m no MTV generation, short attention span girl - despite my ADD). Man I’m glad they didn’t cast DeNiro in Micheal Palin’s role. That would have been a disaster.
My mom is busy cleaning out my grandpa’s house so we can sell it. She brought home her old case of Barbie dolls. Inside was a literal treasure trove of stuff, including quite a few pieces of vintage Skipper fashions (for those not in the know, vintage Skipper fits Blythe perfectly).
So now my doll has more gorgeous vintage clothes than I do! Which is not fair really.
Sofia is turning out to be quite the vintage girl too, which is a bit unexpected. I was planning on dressing her a little bit sixties Italian mod, and a little bit modern Japanese fruits.
But it turns out she looks best in sweet little vintage outfits from the fifties. These dolls really take on personalities all their own!
Here she is! My new dolly.
I hand sewed her little outfit.
The skirt is made from vintage seersucker, and fleecy pink coat has a little vintage starburst button that I’ve been saving for something special (like her).
She does not have a name yet. Boo. I have a hard time naming things. Maybe somebody out there’s got some ideas?
Today:
I sat on a bench on Queen Street west with a huge slice of warm sausage pizza (and some peach juice) and watched the flimsy, floaty flakes of first snow fall into the streetcars, and streets, and cars.
I found a pale blue, vintage, Lacoste cardigan for ten dollars!
I discussed the merits of Blythe dolls with a cute girl from the Magic Pony.
I finished reading a book about the impact of certain beverages throughout history.
Good day.
