married

park bench

One week ago today I was married.

I could make a list of all the things that went wrong (It rained, we forgot our bestman’s tie, we had no non-alcoholic beverages, someone cracked the croquembouche before we got to it).

But none of that mattered because it was perfect, perfect, perfect. Better than perfect, actually.

Despite all of it, I don’t feel that different today.

Happy, certainly…

Well rested (at long last)…

Relieved that we pulled it all off without a hitch (well, maybe that one)…

Excited to be jetting off to Paris in two weeks…

But I don’t love Liam any more or less. I don’t feel any more committed to him than before we slipped on our rings.

We’ve always been connected, always felt that we were forever.

The way I’ve always looked at it this big shindig, is that we were throwing this big amazing party – less to act like the glue to our relationship, the thing that cements us together – and more a celebration of the strength of the bond that was already, always, there.

And that’s what it was: The biggest, best party of our lives. With all the people we love most.

Do you get how perfect, perfect, perfect that is?

the end

new stuff

new dishes

These are some of my new things from the shower. My cupboards just looked so shiny and pretty, I had to share.

So far, I’ve been sleeping on satiny new sheets, dining off these lovely dishes, and stocking my gourmet kithen and it’s enough to make a girl feel like she’s on holiday!

Also of note: look how my Fire King collection has grown! My lovely aunt Lisa did a little bit of sleuthing and found out that I love old fire king mugs. So she ordered a pretty little lot of them on eBay for me! Isn’t that so thoughtful! I particularly love the old pink one. I’ve never seen one like that before – isn’t it cute?

the shower

This weekend, my mom and sister threw me a wedding shower, and it’s lovliness cannot be overstated.

Wedding shower: sheets!

The food was super amazing!!! Pink and green tea sanwiches, broccoli slaw, spinach and strawberry salad, devilled eggs, crab puffs, and a chicken-pesto sanwiches cake (yes, a sanwich shaped like a cake, iced in cream cheese!).

And desert… Tea! In my grandmothers mismatched tea cups, with scones and clotted cream, berry trifle, and the teensy-tiniest doll sized eclairs you’ve ever seen!

Wedding shower: pink & green

On top of that, there was raspberry lemonade, passion iced tea, and a house full of pink, green and white flowers and decorations.

They really went above and beyond.

Despite some minor mishaps (a lot of cancellations, a car accident and localized torrential downpours) it was a pretty perfect afternoon, and even better that I got to share it with my nearest and dearest!

invites, at long last

Invites: done & sent

These are the invites, if you haven’t seen them yet. I’m pretty proud of them, actually. And I should be – they were weeks and weeks of work!

Pie? You ask.

Yep, pie. We’re asking all our friends to bring their favourite pie in lieu of desert.

Pie is, I guess, the closest thing we have to a theme for this shindig, along with a collegiate, 30’s, Wodehousian flavour (yes, we’re complex, abstract kinda people).

I’m particularily happy with the way it all came together… our concept being rather complex and abstract and all. All those colours, all those themes, all our ideas, they’re in there somewhere, represented and personified. Which is ideal really – they say an invite should be a hint, a taste of what’s to come.

So hopefully that means that all our hard work will ultimately pay off on the big day, like it did with our invites.

Invites: almost done

This is why I’ve been away from writing. Those invitations. They are beautiful, they are done, they are away, and they’ve mostly been recieved – so I can talk to you about them without ruining any of the surprise.

And so far, everyones been delightfully surprised. I like making a splash with my little bursts of carefully plotted ephemera. It makes all the weeks (and weeks and weeks) of careful plotting and planning worthwhile.

Especially since, now, I’m a little distracted from wedding planning.

What? However could I be distracted from something so vital, so big, so exciting?

Well… Paris!

We’re honeymooning in Paris. Yes, a cliche, I know, but a good one, don’t you think? Something worth doing, worth experiencing, even if it’s been done before.

summer slugs

Invites: before

Finally working on the invites. Actually the bulk of the work is done. I’ve been slow and sluggish working on things, but I want to get it right.

Other than that, I’m enjoying the summer, in a variety of ways. We went to my familys cottage last week, and yesterday we took a stroll down the street through little India looking for shawls for me and my bridesmaids. I dreamed of dressing like an extra in the Darjeeling Limited – and was nearly convinced to by a lady in a shop who told me: “everyone should wear sari!”

Then we got a snack from a street vendor – fresh grilled corn on the cob smothered in butter, lime juices and spices – amazing!

I would apologise for for the lack of reading material, but what are you doing inside reading this? Get out there, enjoy it too!

illustrative invites

I’ve been realizing something: there are only 3 months left to the wedding. So I’ve also been realizing: it’s time to get cracking!

These past few weeks I’ve been trying to focus on the invitation. As an illustrator and a designer, this is probably one of the most important elements for me… Therefore it is also the most nervewracking! It may just be ephemeral to some, but to me ephemera is so so important!

I’ve been letting ideas steep in my mind, but rather than infuse me with inspiration, they’ve kinda overwhelmed me.

Thankfully, I think I’m finally on to something via Anna Melcon Bond’s lovely Rifle Design.

She. Is. Amazing.

She does some of the most adorable, pretty, illustrative, invites I’ve ever seen, and opened up a whole new world of what an invite can be to me. Check her out! She may just blow your mind too (and her blog is pretty darling as well)

Now I’m excited. This is gonna be good guys. You’re going to like what I’ve come up with!

Hats

Yesterday, we took a little wedding related day-trip. We went to Guelph to visit the Biltmore hat company – one of the last places in North America still making gentlemen’s hats the old fashioned way, and have been doing so since World War One.

We went to the factory outlet there, and got a pretty good deal on a beautiful little pork-pie for Liam’s wedding ensemble. In case you were wondering (and I just know you were) Liam is a 7 and 1/8 hat size.

Hat Liam

While we were there we also tried on various fedoras, trilbys, bowlers, ten-gallons, newsboys, and boaters! Fun!

kimono

Kimono

I went to a costume sale last weekend where a bunch of vintage clothing sellers, and movie costumers were selling off old stock. I expected to find a few wedding related bargains, and boy, did I ever!

I came home with a lovely old antique kimono that I’m going to wear when I get ready – vintage boudoir style! It is bright green, with pink lotus flowers painted on it, and a bright pink silk trim on the inside, that coyly peeks out (it doesn’t seem to photograph so well, unfortunately – at least not with my crappy little iPhone camera!). It’s much brighter than I originally pictured, but I’m a pretty bright person, and it matches my bedroom – so I think I could probably hang it up in there as art when I’m not wearing it (double score!).

It was – get this – 30 bucks! And it’s real, direct from Japan! The idea of vintage clothing – clothing someone else wore once – sometimes creeps me out a little, but I love the idea that some little Japanese girl once wore my kimono – maybe to a happy picnic under cherry blossoms!

I still need to figure out some sort of belt for it – I was thinking of going a non traditional route and buying one of those metallic bow belts from American Apparel. But if I find an more appropriate obi-like solution, I might go in that direction too.

# five fun things: wedding crafts

Haven’t done one of these in a while, so I thought I’d dump some of my recent fave, really sweet online finds for DIY wedding projects here. Hopefully I’ll have the time to implement a few at my own wedding (but the DIY projects are already piling up around here!).

  1. Liberty print ties

My engagement party dress was a liberty print, so obviously I’m a sucker for the stuff, but it’s also such a sweet idea to sew a tie for your groom, and groomsmen! And easier than you’d think.

  2. Hand embroidered pocket square

A secret message sewn unto a handkerchief turns into an adorably personalized pocket square for your groom. This one’s really special.

  3. Fabric boutinierre flower

Sweet, easy little fabric flowers to tuck in a buttonhole.

  4. Bridal party survival kit

I think these are a great idea, but it’s the presentation that really sells it!

  5. Pots of moss

An adorable, easy little project that could be used for centerpieces or favours!

british vogue

I bought the May 2006 issue of British Vogue while I was stuck at the airport during a particularly nasty lightning storm, waiting for my mother in law to arrive. I used to read British Vogue all the time, as it’s editorial attitude was much more fun than American Vogues (that changed soon after – now they’re largely the same, unfortunately).

But this issue.

I picked it up particularly for a certain photo-shoot inside:

britishvogue

It drew me in. It captivated me. I loved it. I had to have it (even for rather expensive import magazine price of ten dollars!).

A few days ago a fellow blogger posted a few scans of it online (click through the image to see more) and I was reminded of it’s vibrant beauty – and realized that some percentage of the inspiration for my wedding was sublimated somehow from it – even though I had forgotten about it. That whimsical, faded, colorful, thirties thing? Well that could certainly also describe my wedding.

And it’s made me decide, that I think I’m going to need to have balloons, certainly.

I was worried they’d look a bit like a kids birthday party, but this has proved to me that the can instead look quite, well… couture.

save the date

save-the-date

Lookit’ everybody!

It’s our Save the Dates!

The turned out really, really well. Everybody who’s seen them has gone a little ga-ga. I’m a little ga-ga.

How did they come about?

Well, we needed save the dates. They’re not a necessary thing, you can totally just send out invites once and be done with it, but since we have so many guests coming from very far away (Australia and Korea far!) we thought they’d be a nice gesture so people have time to make plans.

Then I realized that half my friends are Graphic Designers and artists. This thing had to look awesome. No pressure or anything.

Well, blame it on me reading too many wedding websites, but I was drooling just a little too much over all the crazy-gorgeous engagement photos I’ve been seeing. I also find them just a little ridiculous. Spending all that money on a bunch of professional photo shoots, a year before you even get to the wedding? Seems a little much to me. But at the same time, a nice photo on a postcard seemed liked the easiest route for a save the date.

So we put together our own professional photo shoot instead. We found cute little vintagey outfits (mostly from our own closets), found an atmospheric – but free – location ( which was admittedly a little tricky in the middle of dreary March – but the loading dock at Liam’s former work worked out surprisingly well), posed cutely and got our sister to press the button on a borrowed DSLR camera.

There’s nothing pro about what we did, except for the polished, editorial-quality results. I think they even get across the vibe we’re going for perfectly – vintage, thirties-era whimsy. Which just proves that there’s no need for a fancy-shmancy photo shoot. All you need is a camera, a location and two people in love (although cute outfits help too!).

Oh, and there’s out-takes. Lot’s of them. Good ones. Expect to see them sometime soon, as well.

engagement party recipes (at long last)

I feel good today. Which is a change, because I have felt sick for the past week.

Which is probably only fair, as my life has been a little whirlwindy for the past month or so. Really, since we announced our engagement – things just haven’t stopped!

There have been Wedding Registries,
And operas about water nymphs,
And fancy birthday dinners at french restaurants,
And homey birthday dinners with the family,
And Engagement parties,
And Ben Kweller concerts,
And iPhones,
And Baseball games,
And Tweetups,
And various parties,
And assorted dinners out,
And sundry meetings…

Payback had to come sometime.

This is a roundabouts way of saying: I’m sorry. I promised Engagement Party recipes, and did not deliver. I hope this makes up for it:

engagement party menu

With this menu, I was trying to save me and Liam as much work as possible during the party, so we could enjoy it to the utmost (since we were throwing it for ourselves). That meant things that could be largely pre-prepared, and as much finger food as possible. I knew that I wanted some kind of Chinese barbeque (or char siu) at my Chinese themed party but wasn’t sure how I would serve it to 30 (yes 30!) people.

Then my mother had a brainstorm: Pulled pork can be made in large quantity early in the day, and kept warm in the oven ’til the party. I could make southern Barbecue style, slow cooked, pulled pork sandwiches – but with Chinese flavourings.

Fusion! Genius!

So I made Char Siu pulled pork, and served it with napa cabbage slaw in a creamy ginger-sesame dressing and bought a mountain of little Chinese bakery sweet buns (they look sorta like Pullman rolls, but taste more like eggy brioche – so nummy) with a side of fried rice.

To drink there were pitchers of Singapore slings, ice cold Tsing Taos on the deck.

There were also dumplings to start (frozen ones I got Liam to fry till crispy) and for desert: a mountain of teensy tiny little mandarin oranges, fortune cookies and a tower of cherry chip cupcakes (thank goodness for Betty Crocker) with homemade cream cheese icing, and a shiny chocolate cherry on top.

It was a huge spread, and other than the frying of the fried rice and dumplings, everything pretty much got done before the party! We were able to mostly just sit back and relax, as all our closest friends poured in. In other words: it was ideal, in more ways than one.

engagement party pork bun

my version of char siu (Chinese barbeque)

  • 2 tbsp five spice powder
  • 2 tbsp apricot jam
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (a good Chinese soy sauce, preferably)
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sugar – or honey
  • 1 tsp chili-garlic sauce
  • 5 pounds trimmed, deboned pork shoulder or butt
  1. Mix well, rub onto pork shoulder or butt (marinate overnight, if desired).
  2. Bake in roasting pan at 250 for 5-8 hours – until meat starts to fall apart (flipping meat every hour or so).
  3. Remove meat from marinade/juices/sauce and shred. Add sauce back in and serve (meat may be refrigerated and served the next day, or kept warm, covered, in the oven for an hour or two).

PS: if your cut of meat turns out to be particularly lean, and ends up a tad dry, you can make more of the marinade to serve as a sauce in liu of the juices from the pork. I would omit the five spice and add a little oil. This is especially good if your are making it ahead of time, and reheating it later.

slaw with ginger sesame dressing

  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 tbsp tahini
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 2 scallions (chopped)
  • 1 head napa cabbage (chopped into slaw)
  1. Blend all but scallions in a blender or food processor til’ thick and creamy.
  2. Mix in scallions, and dress napa cabbage slaw. Serve on fluffy buns piled high with pulled pork!

engagement party fried rice

fried rice

  • 4 cups cooked, leftover rice
  • 1 carrot (grated)
  • 1 red pepper (diced)
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 2 cloves garlic (chopped)
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tbsp oil (vegetable)
  • 2 scallions chopped
  1. Pre-heat pot (or wok) with 1 tbsp oil.
  2. Saute vegetables in frying pan with sesame oil, and garlic until peas are de-frosted.
  3. Fry rice in hot oil in pot, until rice is warmed through – scraping bottom of pot continuously to keep it from sticking.
  4. Add vegetables to rice, remove pot from heat.
  5. Add remaining 1 tbsp oil to frying pan, add eggs and 1/2 tbsp soy sauce, and scramble.
  6. Add scallions, soy sauce and scrambled egg to rice, and serve.

engagement party

Liam Me!

We did it!

We threw ourselves a fabulous engagement party! Everything turned out amazingly well – the food was delicious, the apartment looked great, all our friends showed up, everyone had enough space to hang out, and I think we all had a great time (I know I did!).

lanterns

I’ll be posting all the recipes from the night shortly (by overwhelming request, actually – totally the sign of a good spread!).

In the meantime, you can take a look at our pictures from the big night.

Just for fun, you can also take a look at this Flickr set of an amazing kids birthday party by Andrea of Hula Seventy – which was totally the inspiration for this party (adults should get to have that much fun too!). I, of course, added a lot of my own interpretation, and made things a little more grown-up (singapore slings and Tsingtao beer for example), but we wouldn’t have had impetus to go all out – like we did – without her inspiration.

Thanks to everyone who came – and to everyone who couldn’t, but wished us well anyways, too!

family day

Today is the second incarnation of a new holiday here in Ontario: Family day. Which is actually a pretty nice reason to have a holiday. And we have kinda needed a holiday around here. Turns out getting engaged makes you a hot commodity. We haven’t had a weekend to ourselves since before Christmas!

It was my birthday this week, so we actually had a family day yesterday – my mom, dad, brother, sister and her boyfriend came over and we all had delicious exotic takeout (Pakistani curries, kebabs, nan, and handmade kulfi!). Living next to Little India is pretty awesome.

As a birthday present they also did a bit of a revamp to my bathroom – my dad built some much needed shelving (we actually have a place to put towels now!) and replaced a broken light fixture. I sewed up a cute, stripey shower curtain earlier in the week, so it’s starting to get pretty nice in there. Pretty soon I’ll be able to show it off, I think.

This week is going to be a bit of a whirlwind too. We’re throwing ourselves an engagement party, and all our nearest and dearest friends (who happen to live nearby) are going to be showing up on Saturday night – so everything’s gotta be ready for 20-30 people cramming into our little apartment (hence the home-improvement).

We’re also trying to get our “wedsite” up and running – but all we’ve been running into are technical difficulties, unfortunately.

So, in the meantime, I’m posting my little invitation graphic.

It’s going to have a Chinese theme. Fried rice, barbeque pork and dumplings, nomnomnom!

registering

I wasn’t sure I’d want, or need a traditional wedding registry.

We’ve been together 6 years, and have accumulated and inherited pretty much everything we need in that time, and it just seemed like an unnecessary extravagance.

But then, after six years things start to get a bit creaky and precarious, you realize the cheap stuff you got from Ikea as a student should more accurately be looked at as a placeholders, than anything with permanence.

In other words: our dishes are chipped, our towels are mismatched and faded, and our cutlery is bent and tarnished.

It’s time to invest in things that don’t come out of a boxed set for under 20 bucks. Things that, ideally weren’t mass-produced in China or for Ikea.

Being able to register for things now is a god-send – I’m old enough and wise enough know what I really need this time around, and what’s actually going to last me. I’ve already done all the research.

I just blow past the “bridal checklists” and overly-helpful, commission-getting salespeople and march right towards what I actually need, zap it with the gun thingy, and onto the registry it goes.

This time, I’m getting white bone china, 18/10 stainless flatware, and Egyptian cotton sheets.

And I don’t feel weird about it. We’ve been together, struggling for so long, it’s going to feel so nice to finally come home to nice things, things we’ll get to use for the rest of our lives together.

I’m happiest that Crate and Barrel has finally come to Canada. I know in the States that registering there is kinda cliche – but man alive! There’s a pretty good reason for that! They have the most awesome, well designed things! They have picked out all the very best, sturdiest, sexiest stuff – OXO gadgets, Marimeko tablecloths, Wustoff Knives, All Clad cookware.

You don’t know what the registry landscape was like before they arrived (just in the nick of time for me, I might add): here in Canada we have one department store (the Bay) with a very staid, very old fashioned selection of items – and that’s pretty much it. Although, I may still register there for sheets and towels, as C&B has a limited selection – and I might like a Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket – which is lovely, and a traditional item for Canadian brides (my own parents have one they received 30 years ago when they were married – and it’s still kicking around in great condition).

Interested in what I registered for? Well, I’m getting dishes called “Halo”, flatware called “Dune”, and a kitchen knife made to Samurai Sword standards.

What? Nerdy? Us? Never…

inspiration board: groom

At this point, being the person that I am, I’ve pretty much thought out every detail of the wedding (if not outright planned it all). We could pretty much have the wedding next month, if we wanted to (and we don’t – February is not a particularly pleasant time of year).

LIam, on the other hand, is not as organized (some might say: crazy) about these things, so I decided to get going on a file full of pretty images to inspire his celebratory attire. We both kinda know what we want, but needed a good starting place to get the ball rolling.

The overall look we’re going could best be described as collegiate dandy: Think nineteen-thirties Ivy League or Oxford student attending a summer dance.

It is a nod to our love of period literature and movies (particularly of the inter-war period), as well as Liam’s general enthusiasm for fashions of the dapper, but manly variety. We’re planning on using some vintage pieces, but trying to do it all in a modern way – so as to not look too costumey.

inspiration board (groom)

(from left to right)

  1. Vintage 30’s haberdashery illustration

Via: the Fedora lounge. Which is pretty much what it sounds like – a message board for vintage, golden-age, fashion-geeks and fedora-enthusiasts.

Oh, internet: this is why I heart you.

  2. Jeeves and Wooster

Specifically, one Bertie Wooster as portrayed by one Hugh Laurie.

Wodehouse is one of our favourite authors, Bertie is one of our favourite characters, and Laurie (along with a certain Mr. S. Fry) is one of our favourite actors. Liam and I have even named our X-Box live accounts after Wodehouse characters (Gus Finknottle, and Bobby Wickham, respectively).

  3. Argyle sweater vest

You would not believe how hard it is to find a good sweater vest in this day and age.

Of course, when looking for duds of a snazzy variety, Ben Sherman is always a good place to look, they seem to always have a few teddy boy inspired selections. I think something like this will look quite nice under a summer weight jacket, over a vintage tie.

  4. Chuck Bass

The aforementioned Mr. Bass of Gossip Girl. He dresses well for a young lad, no?

Beyond being quite stylish, he is a similar height, build, and colouring to Liam, so rather handily, fashions that look good on him will likely look good on Liam…

Though maybe a little less pink and purple. I think dear Chuck is the only male on the planet who can carry those particular colours.

  5. Biltmore Hats

I’m pretty sure an ensemble like this requires some sort of hat – preferably worn jauntily. Pork pies are a little too nefarious, and proper fedoras are a little too slick. A slouchy fedora is the perfect combination of nonchalance with a touch of rakishness.

Biltmore makes brand new, vintage style hats, in lots of colours and styles. Best of all? They’re made relatively locally (in Guelph, actually). This is a major score.

  6. Titanium ring with gold rose inlay

Liam’s very worried that, whatever ring he gets, he will either lose it, or ruin it. This makes titanium a good option in either case – titanium rings are virtually indestructible, and relatively inexpensive.

I like that this ring has a touch of rose gold in it to reference my ring – and of course, it’s an etsy find, which I also like.

  7. PF Flyer Grounder Hi

Shoe option #1: Cute, hi-top, boot-like sneakers are both stylish and practical – they’ll be really comfortable on the big day and once that’s done with Liam can keep wearing them. They’re made by a company that has been around since the thirties, and reissues their old styles so they’ve got that old fashioned look to them – but the idea of sneakers at a wedding is totally fresh and modern.

  8. Cuff links

It’s a wedding: shirts with cuffs that require links are de rigueur.

These pretty little cuff links are from Etsy (yay!). Even though they’re not rose gold, they’ve got a bronzey, rosey tinge to them that’s very pretty.

  9. Remix Vintage men’s Bucks

Shoe option #2: Vintage style suede shoes. Less practical, less thrifty, but a little more snappy, don’t you think?

working a vintage look

I’ve been thinking of working a vintage look – something thirties era – at the wedding. It’s been a really long time since I played around with makeup, and I figure this is as good excuse as any to get back on the bandwagon.

It’s pretty much as tricky as it looks, so I’ve started practicing already – liquid liner swoops and perfect, ruby-red, bow lips are not exactly for the feint of heart!

Thankfully, I ran across these handy little video tutorials – this one is especially appropriate for the look I’m going for – but there’s one for every era and occasion, from Marie Antoinette to flapper. They’re super cute, and the makeup artist has this sweet and soothing Aussie accent – she makes it all sound easy!

P.S. I’m thinking in investing in some of these swanky, vintage inspired cosmetics by Besame. Aren’t they perfect!

five fun (etsy) things #09 (for a modern wedding)

Weddings seem to be all about lace and pearls and all manner of frippery, and for those of us who weren’t all that into the girly stuff to begin with, it can start to feel pretty suffocating:

Frankly, drowned in a sea of pink roses and satin ruffles is not exactly the way I want to go out.

What about the kind of girl who prefers typography over calligraphy, functional over fussy, prosecco over champagne, thank you very much? For the unfussy, design minded bride, it can seem like there aren’t a lot of options.

It takes a little time and effort (although if you’ve ever spent a day kerning letters that’s not really a problem for you) but options, they can be found. So thank your lucky stars for Etsy, and the fact that, going for the unexpected and original is massively, makes you spit your celebratory prosecco out, affordable.

five-fun-09

  1. Custom Cake Toppers by Goosegrease

These little wooden dolls are adorable cake toppers – personal, but modern, in a clean-lined Scandinavian sort of way.

Even though wedding toppers are perhaps, a little old-fashioned, and a bit of a silly indulgence, I really love them because I think personal ones are an awesome keepsake to remember your day. A little statue of you and your boy in your finest sitting on the mantle is a much more unique than the ubiquitous, over-sized, wedding portrait.

  2. Ruffle Dress by Lisa Rietz

This dress is just plain gorgeous and that’s the bottom line. A wedding custom dress, in your size, for that price? Even more amazing.

It’s white and it’s satin, and it’s got ruffles – so no ones’ going to think you’re a guest at your own wedding – but it does all of those things in a way which is fresh, clean, modern and just a little unconventional. It’s a dress that does everything the best graphic design should do – it expresses itself in a precise but intriguing way.

  3. Unpearl Necklace by Smashing

If you’re a designer, you probably find it a lot of fun to play around with, and subvert cliches, and the pearl necklace at the wedding certainly is one.

This handmade piece brings a certain, unexpected, industrial, edge to the old-standby, and I love it.

  4. Felt Fascinator by Chirichi

A girl’s gotta have something silly and pretty on her wedding day, and what better way to fulfill that need than with this little concoction?

The use of graphic black and white felt keeps it from straying into fussy and froofy territory.

  5. Flipped Black Diamond Ring by Kate Szabone

This is by the gal who did my engagement ring (and wedding band), and can I say?

    Genius.

If I were a little more gutsy, I totally would have gone for something like this. It’s completely the opposite of what’s expected (a black diamond? Up-side down? Whaaaaat?) but gorgeous. Your friends will work themselves into a tizzy when the see it (PS: Black diamonds are dirt cheap, so you can rock something the size of a babies fist for the same price as somebody else’s boringly tasteful ring).

P.S. I avoided the whole invitations quagmire, because I’m thinking this bride has already got that down. This bride’s already got a signature typeface and monogram picked out, and knows her cardstock will be a pale blue Strathmore watercolour paper, and could also tell you the paper weight and envelope size, if asked. She does not need help with graphic design projects.

… She = Me, obviously.

things I did over the holidays

  1. Braved the Snowpocalypse (Snowmaggedon?) to go to my cousins wedding all the way in Welland.

It was beautiful. Or I assume it was. It took 4 hours to do a 1 hour drive, so we kinda missed the ceremony. We totally rocked the reception though.

  2. Avoided the malls like the plague

Bought or made homemade presents instead.

  3. Finished Gears of War II on co-op.

Sometimes, I like to shoot stuff. This is going to come in handy this year, I think. As stress reliever, I mean.

  4. Received my favourite Christmas Present ever: unpasteurized CHEESE!

    Seriously.

I like cheese. Plus the unpasturized stuff is not really legal here in Ontario. So there’s the added sexy-danger element.

  5. Had a nervous breakdown in William Ashely.

    Registries are stressful.

Bone china? A thousand dollars a place setting? Really? And I need 16 place settings? What?

  6. Had an epiphany in Crate and Barrel.

    Registries are wonderful!

As are stores with beautiful, well designed, edited, reasonably priced house wares (including gorgeous bone china – which is the sturdiest thing you can get, so you should use it for your everyday dishes).

  7. Bought Liam new shoes.

They’re grey checkered high top Vans. They’re pretty cute.

  8. Tested out champagne cocktails with friends over New Years.

    Verdict: cheaper is better. Win-win!

  9. Built a wedding website.

    Wedsite?

I dunno. A place on the interweebz to put weddingy crap. It turned out pretty nice. It will launch soon (as soon as Liam puts his copy writing skillz to work and fills in all the blanks).

  10. Had poutine.

Mine was Montreal style with smoked meat, mustard and a pickle. I thought it was pretty good, but I see what people are getting at with the gravy. It had a strong sage flavour, but I like that in a gravy, so I was cool with it.

  11. Bought flannel sheets.

This is a bigger deal than it sounds: Good quality flannel sheets in the winter are one of the best investments you will can make: seriously, they will change, and simultaneously rock your world. Just make sure they aren’t the cheap stiff ones. The soft ones: they are where it’s at.

  12. Were taken (for a wonderful engagement present from my sister and her boy) to Jamie Kennedy Wine Bar.

It was amazing, and not as expensive as you’d think There were four of us, and we had 8 entrees (shared tapas style), 5 deserts, a bottle of wine and it came in under two hundred dollars.

You can’t do that at the keg – and this was much more special.

The black cod in particular was awesome – really fresh and wonderful, like it had just come out of the ocean. I was in love with the cheese plate – beautiful local Ontario and Quebec cheeses served with honey comb and these amazing little spiced walnuts. The fries are as good as people say they are – although actually, I think Batifole’s are just a little bit better. Just a little though.

  13. Bought two wedding dresses.

    Long story.

  14. Decided on a venue.

    A very nice venue indeed.

  15. Made it through season one of Dexter.

    Not bad.

Never thought I’d find a Serial Killer adorable, but, I do, I do.

(Boy, was I busy).
